Snapshots from the Aran Islands

Irish field, fence, and gate

The Aran Islands consists of three islands in the Atlantic off the coast of Ireland.  You can reach them by ferries leaving from Galway or Doolin.   I left from Doolin since it was such a great base location for visiting the Cliffs of Moher and the Aran Islands, not to mention it’s a pretty little town in and of itself.  I used Doolin Ferries to head over to Inis Mor.

We hadn’t done much planning but knew there were ruins on the Island so my travel companion and I went off in search of them… and along the way, we became horribly lost, wandering around many an Irish people’s backyards for hours. Well, most of the day on the Island actually. However, we did make it back to the boat on time, just barely, at a bit of a jog really. The open landscape was worth it though. It reminded me of a setting right out of The Quiet Man, with Maureen O’Hara and John Wayne, a favorite St. Patty’s Day tradition of mine. Below are some pictures taken during this epic quest.

When we reached the ruins, which we saw from a half mile away due to its size, we finally saw a sign!!!!
